Introduction:

The accelerated pace of producing scientific information as well as the increasing spread of medical fields of study in the recent decades have trained the manpower who are efficient in training appropriate teaching methods, making proper student assessments and having necessary capabilities for educational planning and evaluation. Regarding this, the necessity of Master's Degree in Medical Education was approved by the Higher Council for Planning in 1373 and is reviewed according to the requirements.

This department has been established at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences since the academic year of 1388-1389, with the license number A/338382 dated 1387/9/5 and the admission capacity of 5 students.

 Duty:

Recruiting talented faculty members and experts interested in the complex issues of medical education in today's ever-changing world, the field of medical education intends to train graduate students with the ability to identify education problems through conducting appropriate research, provide logical and assessable solutions to educational problems, assist all medical schools in planning and management of educational issues and transfer appropriate technologies and teaching methods to enhance the capabilities of the faculty members, as well as take part in improving the situations of medical schools with identifying strengths and weaknesses of the academic education and the causes of development of universities around the world.

 Mission:

Department of Medical Education, following the provisions of the Comprehensive Scientific Health Plan, intends to properly meet the needs of all customers of medical schools in order to train graduate medical students to:

have the ability to identify educational problems through conducting appropriate research.

provide logical and assessable solutions toward educational problems.

Assist the medical schools in planning and management of educational issues.

Be able to identify strengths and weaknesses of the academic education.

Be competent in transferring technologies and appropriate teaching methods.

Play an important role in improving the situations of medical schools with identifying the causes of development of universities around the world.

 

At the end of the course, graduate students must:

Have the ability to conduct activities to make the necessary changes in order to enhance the quality of education.

Have the ability to design and conduct educational research in order to identify and overcome the problems.

Be able to design appropriate evaluation methods for educational programs.

Have the ability to actively participate in the development of the university's strategic plan.

Master the methods of designing new educational programs and technologies as well as new teaching methods, and be able to develop teaching skills required by faculty members.

 

Objectives and Visions:

    • Vision

This department aims to identify and solve the problems related to medical sciences education, trusting in the committed human resources specializing in medical education as well as relying on new innovations in the areas of production, revision, dissemination and exploitation of knowledge, and tries to pave the way for medical education system in universities to achieve a superior position in the country and the region, both in terms of quantitative and qualitative dimensions.

  1. Improving the capabilities of faculty members through holding seminars and workshops
  2. Providing a context for the growth and development in medical education by conducting and directing research in this field
  3. Selecting and recruiting talented faculty members and experts interested in medical education issues 
  4. Providing faculty members of medical schools with consulting services in the field of medical education 
  5. Providing appropriate and high quality educational services for the target population.
  6. Providing a proper context for reaping the benefits of services offered by the researchers and elites for the purposes of medical education system
  7. Publishing and sharing knowledge generated in the field of medical education

Educational Technology Lab (ETL) is a part of the Department of Medical Education in the School of Medicine in Mashhad, Iran. This laboratory was established with the support of the Center of Excellence in Educational Technology for Medical Sciences, aiming to respond to the technological needs relating to learning and teaching in the field of medical sciences. This laboratory has been designed in a modular and portable form and is equipped with software and hardware facilities. It would be appreciated if the website of the laboratory is visited in order to learn about the ways through which it could improve the educational activities and endeavors by using technology.

Department of Medical Education was officially established in the School of Medicine in 2009 by admitting five graduate students in the field of Medical Education, endeavoring to promote the culture of education and training. In 2010, six students were accepted in person, and the only educational department that had official permit to provide virtual training in 2011 was the School of Medicine. After two steps of evaluation (written and interview), 15 students were selected for virtual education in the School of Medicine. In 2015, virtual students of this department in the field of Medical Education increased to 52 individuals, more than 60% of whom were faculty members of the university.

In 2015, department of Medical Education was able to obtain the final approval of the Council of Development and Planning Ministry for providing the curriculum of “Educational Technology in Medical Sciences” for graduate students for the first time. In October 2016, seven students were selected for this field. Currently, this educational department has 13 students in the field of “on-site Medical Education” and 50 students in the field of “Community-oriented Education in Healthcare System”, attending the classes of this department virtually. There are about 50 students in the distance course of this department, being trained in three on-site educational blocks.

The department of Medical Education has one education expert and one research expert, aiming to establish a research center for “Evidence-Based Education” to advance further education and research purposes of the university.

Faculty members of this department are four full-time and three part-time individuals, among whom one is a professor, two are associate professors, one is an assistant professor and three are instructors.

Establishing the field of Technology of Education in Medical Sciences, this department initiated a laboratory to pass the scientific credits of the mentioned course. In this laboratory, the latest equipment and facilities are used, and there is a special simulation room for virtual audio recording and content production.

Research priorities of this department include: foresight in medical education, social responsiveness, research in education, communication skills, interdisciplinary education and its consequences, professionalism, evidence-based education and its consequences, interdisciplinary education, community-based medical education, educational design and management of crude academic behavior.
